I took ten days off from writing this month.
Gasp! Shudder. The world did not come to an end. I didn’t miss any writing deadlines (although I came darn close with this blog post), and Oprah didn’t call while I was out of town.
I went on a vacation with my family. (I had to look up the meaning of the word “vacation” since it’d been so long since I’d actually used it in a sentence.) We visited the Oregon coast, a spot we’d never been, and one that’s a long way from our home in Colorado. The purpose of the trip was relaxation (another word I had to look up), so we had nothing planned but long walks on the beach, maybe a hike or two through nearby old growth forests, a jet boat trip up the Rogue River, long soaks in the hot tub, and a few good meals.
Heaven.
Let me start by saying Oregon is lush and gorgeous, with more shades of green than Ireland. The coastline had my nose pressed against the window glass all the way down from Newport to Gold Beach. Mist, fog, rain, sunshine and wind kept us from getting complacent about the weather. We oohed and aahed over seals, otters, quail, ospreys, bald eagles, deer, sea lions, hummingbirds and other critters.
However, the best part of getting away was not what was there, but what was missing….
